Every D2C founder and retail business owner eventually faces this question: should we build on Shopify, or go custom? There's no universally right answer — but there is a right answer for your specific situation. Here's how to think through it.
When Shopify is the Right Choice
Shopify is genuinely excellent for most D2C brands, especially those in fashion, beauty, food & beverage, and lifestyle categories. It offers fast time-to-market, a rich app ecosystem, managed hosting, and a strong developer community. If you want to launch in 4–8 weeks and you don't have unusual catalogue or pricing requirements, Shopify is usually the pragmatic choice.
When Custom Development Makes Sense
Custom development becomes compelling when you have complex requirements that Shopify's platform can't accommodate well: very large catalogues (100,000+ SKUs), complex B2B pricing and ordering workflows, deep ERP integration requirements, multi-brand/multi-tenant architectures, or when regulatory requirements create constraints that Shopify's standard compliance doesn't meet.
The Hidden Cost of Shopify App Stacking
One of the most underestimated Shopify costs is app fees. It's common for mid-size stores to spend ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 per month on Shopify apps for features that would be built-in on a custom platform. At that scale, custom development often makes financial sense.
Performance Considerations
Shopify's default themes can be slow. Custom Shopify theme development with performance optimisation can achieve excellent Core Web Vitals scores. However, for absolute maximum performance, custom Next.js commerce builds have an edge.
Our Recommendation
Start with Shopify unless you have a clear reason not to. You can always migrate to a custom platform when your volume and requirements justify it. The cost of getting to market faster almost always outweighs the benefits of building custom from day one.
